NEWPORT CLASS LSTs

WHAT BECAME OF THEM?

 

Navies receiving Newport Class LSTs to date include Australia (2), Brazil (1), Chile (1), Malaysia (1), Mexico (2), Spain (2, 1 still in service), and Taiwan (2). Another 3 were sunk as targets during training exercises, and 2 remain in the inactive reserve.

    17 November 2000 Damaged beyond economical repair, 12 September 2000 due to grounding at Caleta Cifuncho Bay, Chile Sunk as a target, 10 July 2001. As part of the annual UNITAS exercise she was towed offshore and expended as a target by gun fire, surface to surface missiles and finally finished off with submarine-launched torpedoes.

Sunk as a target 6 April 2004, sunk by AGM-65 and AGM-84 damage at location: 022° 57' 20.0" North, 160° 05' 01.5" West Depth: 2560 fathoms
